In making the most of these snowy days, we've X-country skied to some
boxes. A bit more challenging than without snow, but fun. Has anyone
else tried to X-C ski and letterbox in the Hartford/Tolland counties?
Northwest Park in Windsor has great X-C ski trails (with lots of
boxes). Any suggestions of good X-C trails? Might as well enjoy
winter, as it's here to stay for a while!

Anyobe know about renting snow shoes? I have no idea about how to use them or what kinds are good, but it sounds like a neat idea for these snowy winter boxes!

Northwest park also rents snowshoes. This may be the first good
snowshoe winter in a while. I havn't tried them, but I hear tell
they are easy once you get the hang of it. A good pair of winter
boots also does well in the snow.

Most bigger sportings goods stores will rent
snowshoes, like Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS), I'd
call around. I recommend using xc ski poles for
balance until you get the knack of walking a bit wider
than usual (sort of a duck waddle). I was out breaking
trail for Butterfly & Bluebird at Milo Light on
Saturday, though you really would do fine with just
knee high gaitors to keep the snow out of your boots.

An excellent place to x-country ski and snowshoe is
Northwest Park in Windsor. They have about 10 miles of trials, trail map is
available at www.northwestpark.org. Also, they
rent both skis and snowshoes.
Added attractions are the numerous LBs now planted there, may not be
accessible in the snow, but "scouting" them out for spring will be fun.

Butterfly
NWP will be a great location for a gathering, I think it might be better
suited for spring. There is a "warming shed", but not sure of the
details of it. I'll check on it though and let you know.

I have heard rumbles [from Letterboxer 2002] about a winter gather. I loved Northwest Park when I saw it the very first time, and mentioned what a great place for a winter gather.
How about it you people up there ??
